If there’s one health issue I hear about again and again from women, it’s fibroids. And it’s often paired with confusion, fear, or pressure to make quick decisions.
So if you’ve been diagnosed with fibroids, if you’ve been told ‘just keep an eye on them’, or worse—if you’ve been made to feel afraid, powerless, or rushed into surgery… Take a deep breath with me right now…
Because this conversation isn’t about fear. It’s about understanding. It’s about choice. And it’s about remembering that your body—especially your uterus—is wise.
Today on I Love Me The Podcast, I want to gently walk you through:
- What fibroids actually are
- Why they’re so common
- How they can affect your body, your fertility, and your emotional wellbeing
- And most importantly, how healing fibroids can happen naturally—without invasive procedures or taking your body apart.
By the end of this episode, my hope is that you’ll feel empowered, seen, and ready to take the next steps in caring for your body and your precious womb.
Simple, inspiring lessons in self-love. Hello beautiful woman, it’s Tamra here.
If you start talking to women—like really talking—you’ll quickly realise how common fibroids are.
Some women have one or two.
Others have literally, dozens.
And what’s heartbreaking is that many women go through invasive procedures to remove them… only to have them return within months—often worse than before.
In fact, a review published in the International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2017 revealed that 70% of women will develop fibroids in their lifetime.
That’s nearly three out of every four women.
Fibroids account for 33% of all gynaecological hospital admissions, and they’re the number one reason for hysterectomy in America.
Let that sink in for a moment.
Because ideally…
We do not want to be cutting out our most womanly parts.
Our uterus is not disposable.
And removing it opens the door to a whole cascade of other issues—which I’ll speak more about shortly.
This is why I wanted to share this conversation with you today.
So, let’s start with the basics.
What really is a fibroid?
A fibroid is a benign—non-cancerous—tumour of the uterus.
So no, it’s not life-threatening.
But that doesn’t mean it’s harmless.
Fibroids can:
- Lower fertility
- Increase the risk of miscarriage
- Cause pelvic pain
- Create heavy or irregular bleeding
- Lead to anaemia and exhaustion
- And interfere with bladder or bowel function
Sometimes, fibroids press against the bladder or rectum, leading to urinary incontinence or discomfort.
In more severe cases—particularly during times of hormonal fluctuation like menopause or periods of intense stress—fibroids can cause haemorrhaging.
And here’s something really important to understand:
The reason your menstrual flow normally stops is because of strong uterine contractions.
Fibroids interfere with that process.
So if your bleeding is long, heavy, or depleting…
That’s your body asking for attention.
Heavy bleeding is not normal.
And it can be healed.
You don’t need to suffer in silence.
During pregnancy, hormone levels are really high—and that can cause existing fibroids to grow quickly.
One of the problems with this, is that if they start to degenerate—due to low oxygen supply—this can sometimes cause the uterus to contract, and ultimately result in a premature delivery.
Many pregnancies with fibroids are absolutely fine!
But healing fibroids before conception creates a healthier, calmer uterus—and reduces the risk of complications.
Think about it…
For the course or your pregnancy, your uterus is your babies’ home.
You want them to have a clean, healthy environment, so they can develop without interference.
Interestingly, many women don’t even know they have fibroids until a routine pelvic exam.
How much pain or stress fibroids cause you, really has to do with the size and the place they decide to hang out in.
For fibroids can grow in all sorts of locations on and within the uterine wall itself or in the uterine cavity.
Doctors often describe them by comparing them to pregnancy size— ‘three months pregnant’, ‘five months pregnant’.
The largest I’ve ever heard of was compared to a watermelon!
Aside from the physical discomfort, these large fibroids can make a woman look several months pregnant, and very self-conscious.
So…
What are these fibroids made of?
Fibroids are primarily made of collagen, a fibrous connective tissue.
They’re often hard, white, and gristly.
They tend to be more common in African American women than Caucasians, and premenopausal women have a higher risk than postmenopausal women.
While they can run in families, it’s also true that…
When the emotional root cause is addressed, fibroids can resolve and never return.
So when it comes to healing fibroids naturally, it’s about looking at what emotions and beliefs have embedded into your cells.
Once you do that, with a therapist like myself, or with techniques you may already have, then you change how the cell responds to life.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, fibroids are considered to be the result of a deficient Spleen.
When the Spleen is out of balance, it struggles to transform food into nutrients and energy.
When this happens…
The excess turns into dampness.
The dampness stagnates and becomes phlegm, which then congeals into tumours; what we call fibroids.
So any treatment plan for healing fibroids needs to involve supporting the Spleen, reducing dampness and phlegm in the body, and helping the uterus cleanse itself properly.
Now, you may be wondering…
What should I do about these fibroids?
If they’re not causing you any significant issues, fibroids can be left to be, and checked every six months to a year to monitor growth.
It’s not uncommon for them to form during a period of greater stress, an emotionally demanding time, during pregnancy or the year or so before menopause.
The fibroid can start to break down or shrink when it outgrows its blood supply.
This process can be a little painful, as the nerves deep inside the tissue register this lack of oxygen as ‘pain’.
But this sensation usually passes within a week or so.
Your time of month will also impact fibroid growth.
While our hormones are in cyclical movement, if your hormones are more extreme due to an imbalance in the body, it’s very normal for fibroids to peak in size at the time of ovulation, and just before your period begins.
While they may grow before menopause—if hormones are not supported well—they often shrink afterwards, once the hormones comes back into balance.
The important thing to know, is that in most cases…
Fibroids are rarely a medical emergency.
So many women are rushed into surgery out of fear.
When the truth is…
You have time.
And you have choices.
If you’re willing to look at the underlying causes of the fibroids—the emotional and lifestyle issues that are contributing to their growth—then usually they either go away on their own, or can melt away with the help of modalities like Pelvic Steam Therapy or Yoga for the Vagina.
In fact, I regularly have ladies from my Yoga for the Vagina program email me, saying how—after committing to a regular practice—their fibroids have either disappeared completely or significantly reduced.
The reason Yoga for the Vagina is so effective, is because it increases circulation, it restores pelvic vitality, and it helps you listen more deeply to what your body is trying to communicate to you.
Often when fibroids show up, it’s because we’re suppressing our desires, have unexpressed creativity…
Maybe there’s an internal conflict around work, money or mothering.
We need to remember that the uterus is the home of creativity, mothering and birthing.
Birthing babies or birthing ideas or projects.
And if we’re not honouring our instinctual creative desires, then our body will let us know.
And one of the ways it let’s us know, is through fibroids.
Fibroids literally take up space in the uterus.
This is symbolic of how there can be something else taking up space in a woman’s life, crowding her creativity.
That’s where creating space in your life to honour your creativity, can be so healing when it comes to fibroids.
And this is why hysterectomy is rarely the answer.
As it doesn’t get to the root cause of the issue.
What you also need to understand, is that…
Hysterectomy removes more than an organ.
It disrupts hormonal balance, libido, orgasmic response and pelvic stability.
It can cause prolapse and deep emotional trauma.
Now in some cases, hysterectomy is necessary.
But in most, it’s not.
That’s where it’s important to let your doctor offer you options.
But then, you’re the one who gets to choose what happens with your body, and your womb.
Another way that I’ve found to be extremely effective in healing fibroids naturally, is through steaming the pelvis.
I talked in depth about this in the last episode, but in a nutshell, Pelvic Steaming is where a woman sits over a pot of hot herb-infused water, and allows the steam to carry those healing nutrients into the pelvis, creating circulation and deep inner healing.
Why it works in the case of fibroids, is because that warmth —over time—helps melt the fibroids so they can come out during menstruation.
Because the warmth increases circulation, this supports the uterus in cleansing itself each month.
For that’s what menstruation is, it’s a monthly cleanse.
And I talk about this in detail in Episode 16: Womb Care 101.
Unfortunately, many women have lifestyle habits that get in the way of the uterus doing a full cleanse each month.
Over time, the uterus starts to accumulate residue, and this is the perfect condition for fibroid growth.
So in supporting the uterus in having full cleanses each month, you’re helping the uterus come back into a healthy state, so that it’s not the kind of place where fibroids want to grow.
How long it takes to clear out fibroids with my Pelvic Steam Therapy program depends on the severity of the fibroids, but what I usually see is anywhere between 3-months and 12-months, if the woman is also applying the womb care practices and lifestyle changes I share in her personalised Steam Plan, that support the body in coming back into balance.
When I do up a steam plan for women in my Pelvic Steam Therapy program it’s helping address the Spleen imbalance, like I mentioned before, is one of the causes of fibroids.
So we’re bale to gently rebalance the body, help it come back into harmony.
And the best bit is, steaming is gentle and enjoyable.
A really beautiful practice in self-love.
So if you’ve been looking for solutions, hopefully today’s episode has offered you some loving next steps in your healing fibroids journey.
What I will say… is that…
Fibroids don’t come out of nowhere.
They come from misalignment.
And because your body created them, your body can heal them.
When you’re willing to know your pelvis, to honour your creativity, to listen to your body—
healing unfolds.
Just as we contribute to illness, we contribute to healing.
Thanks for listening today.
If you know any lady friends who are struggling with fibroids, please share this episode with them.
I also have a How To Heal Fibroids free guide on my website, gettingnaked.com.au.
I’ll pop a direct link in the show-notes, so you can check that out as well.
And if you want to get started on Yoga for the Vagina, I have a free starter’s sequences that you download from my sister site: yogaforthevagina.com
They are two really great resources that will get you on your way in your healing fibroids journey.
But remember:
When beliefs change, cells change.
When patterns dissolve, fibroids have nothing to feed on.
And that is how we guide our uterus back into health and harmony.
